Mebane, NC, 3-1-17 – Mighty Neighborly, a non-profit organization dedicated to building stronger communities through dialogue, education and outreach, today announced its third benefit concert. Proceeds from the April 9th show at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC will support the UNC Center for Civil Rights (http://www.law.unc.edu/centers/civilrights).

About the Center for Civil Rights
Since its founding in 2001 by the legendary Julius L. Chambers, the UNC Center for Civil Rights has furthered its mission of dismantling structural racism by providing legal counsel, representation and technical support to low-income communities of color across the state. Subsisting totally on private donations, the Center helps those communities use research-based advocacy to access equitable education, housing and infrastructure (including water, sewer and other municipal benefits) and to fight against environmental injustice, political and economic exclusion. Law students work year-round under the supervision of the Center’s two staff attorneys and Attorney Fellow, furthering the Center’s mission to train the next generation of civil rights lawyers.
Although the Center uses litigation sparingly and as a last resort, it is a necessary tool to protect the communities it serves. The Center’s work, which has earned it a place of leadership among national organizations like the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, furthers the University’s public service mission and attracts quality students and faculty to UNC Law.
“Mighty Neighborly is opposed to a recent proposal before the UNC Board of Governors which would prevent the Center for Civil Rights from suing. The ability of the Center to litigate has led to many instances of social justice, including important cases about educational equity and desegregation, housing, zoning and environmental justice,” said Phil Venable, founder and Board chair for Mighty Neighborly. “In February, the Center’s lawyers argued in the NC state Supreme Court on behalf of people who were involuntarily sterilized by the state,” said Venable. “Mighty Neighborly strongly supports the mission, work and legacy of the Center for Civil Rights and opposes this power grab by the BOG,” he added.
